Having A Wonderful Time In Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania means “Penn’s Woodland,” and if the idea of staying in a secluded Pennsylvania cabin rental in forested hill country sounds romantic to you, then a vacation in the Keystone State is for you. But there is much more to this historic and scenic area than the abundant rural countryside.

In fact, the best destination to start your tour of Pennsylvania will definitely be to go to see Philadelphia, long known as the gateway of the state. At the Independence Visitor Center, you can get started scheduling your exploration of the city and by going to their web site. Here, helpful individuals can advise you about Philadelphia’s many historical sites, cultural institutions, tours and activities during the year. You can additionally get free or low-cost passes to ride many of the city’s mass transportation facilities.

One of Pennsylvania’s great attractions is the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, which you encounter almost as soon as you start traveling west out of Philadelphia. By the way, “Dutch” does not mean these folks are from the Netherlands. The word is a corruption of deutsche, meaning “German.” They are Old Order Amish and Mennonites whose ancestors came from Southern Germany and Switzerland over 300 years ago and they have been remarkably successful at maintaining their traditional way of life.

From the romantic travel inns in Lancaster, you can visit their communities as well as purchase their wares and produce for sale and see first hand how farms operated before the 20th Century. While you are in Lancaster, you should check out the Mennonite Information Center to get started. By the way, if anyone says “You look plain, English,” smile and say “Thank You,” as it is a compliment.

Moving west, you will come to Gettysburg, where the only battle of the American Civil War to be fought north of the Mason-Dixon was fought. Historic cabins and recreations, including ghost tours, are well-known activities here. The approved thorough guide to tours of Gettysburg, including cabin rentals and other lodging facilities, is an Internet site known as “Gettysburg Address”.

One of the more interesting trends in travel these days is agritourism, where people stay, learn and even participate on an actual working farm. Butler County is not only one of the state’s most beautiful areas, it is also the breadbasket of the state and home to large fairs and even wineries. Located in the scenic Alleghenies, Butler County could be the high point of your Pennsylvania vacation.

Racing In The Streets In Daytona

If riding a wave that curls over your head, at which instant is recognized as “tubular”, is your concept of a spectacular time, then a beach vacation at Daytona Beach, one of the USA’s premier surfing spots, is a good choice. Located on Florida’s central Atlantic Coast and only 90 minutes from the theme park capitol of the world, Orlando, Daytona is home to golden beaches with world class surf, motor sports and a spirited nightlife.

Whether you are here to visit Ron Jon’s and other surf shops, attending an event at the Daytona International Speedway, participating in Biketoberfest or just lying on the beach sipping exotic drinks, beach rentals are so much better in a great accommodation. You will be happy to know that there are many beach rental deals available in Daytona Beach these days. Some beach rentals offer discounts of over 80% during the off season. If you are planning on attending a speedway event while on your beach vacation, you may find some package deals that will enable you to save on both lodgings and speedway admissions.

Heart of Florida’s Fun Coast area, the city of Daytona Beach itself is less than 70,000 people except when guests arrive for various activities all through the year. Because of the tightly packed sand, Daytona Beach lured motoring fanatics early on. Motor sports date back to 1902, and the first of stock car races that would ultimately evolve into NASCAR race and the Daytona 500 was held in 1936.

Since the 1920s, Daytona Beach has had a reputation as the “World’s Most Famous Beach,” and it is no small wonder. The offshore surroundings with its sandy base and regular swells make it the ideal surfing spot, particularly at Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna. You can see the Volusia County Website for regular updates on surf conditions.

For the kids, there is a bunch of fun outdoor activities that include miniature golf, go-karts and even a ghost tour. Haunts of the World’s Most Famous Beach Ghost Tours will appeal to history buffs, budding scientists and those who want a good ghost story. It’s not all about the water, however. In neighboring DeLand, you can charter a balloon for a bird’s eye look at the area. Another method to tour the area from the air is to go parasailing at Ponce Inlet.

After a day with the kids, Mom and Dad will be grateful for an opportunity to get away by themselves for a little romantic travel inns, and might consider treating themselves to a romantic evening dinner cruise out of Caribbean Jack’s in Daytona Beach. The quiet, sub-tropical conditions lends itself to this and other activities right through the year, but the springtime is specially pleasing with balmy days and cool nights. And by the way, if you are concerned about running into unruly college kids on spring break, don’t be. The city council has taken action to dissuade such activities and with other alternatives available, the college crowd has dwindled making Daytona Beach a family-friendly vacation spot any time of the year.

On A Boat In Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is the gem of the Sierra Nevada at any occasion of the year but particularly in the winter. Sitting astride the California-Nevada state line about fifty miles northeast of Sacramento and less than fifteen miles southwest of Carson City. Easily accessible via U.S. Highway 50, Lake Tahoe has lots of vacation rentals available throughout the year but the region is particularly known as leading ski vacation country.

Like the Sierra Nevada Mountains themselves, Lake Tahoe is fairly young, geologically speaking. The Tahoe basin was carved out about two million years ago when a small tectonic plate between the Sierra Nevada and the Carson Range dropped, forming what geologists call a graben. After this, the eruption of a now extinct volcano formed a natural dam on the north side. Over the next million years, a sequence of glaciers advanced and retreated, forming Lake Tahoe as we appreciate it today.

At an elevation of over 6000 feet, it is the highest alpine lake in the U.S., and second only to Oregon’s Crater Lake in terms of depth. Fed by mountain streams, it is the source of the Truckee River, its sole outlet which also provides excellent opportunities for fly fishing and white water rafting. Make a reservation early to book a charming cabin rental with direct access or a view to the lake.

The earliest human inhabitants of the region were Waashiu Indians, who gave Lake Tahoe its name. Nineteenth Century John Fremont was most likely the first European to see Lake Tahoe in 1844. Curiously, the lake was originally named for John Bigler, who was the governor of California from 1852 to 1856. Although the lake was renamed Tahoe by the Department of the Interior under Abraham Lincoln, the name “Lake Bigler” stuck until after the Second World War.

As you might imagine, the Lake Tahoe vicinity is diverse in history as well as recreational possibilities such as fishing, skiing, camping and hiking. Having been both a national park and a resort for nearly 150 years, the Lake Tahoe region has a fair number of historic mansions as well as old mining and logging camps and of course, close by Carson City, where you can get a taste of what the Wild West was like back in the day. In fact, steam power is thriving and well in the region. An old fashioned paddle boat still skims the waters of Lake Tahoe, and the Truckee & Western Railroad provides rides on an authentic 1870 vintage steam train.

For winter sports lovers, Lake Tahoe is home to no less than twelve major ski resorts, which are generally operational between late November until early April. Most of these are located on the lake’s northern edge near Truckee. However, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, located in close proximity to the town of South Lake Tahoe, will get the largest snowfall of any ski areas in the region which makes for great romantic getaways.

For the kids and non-skiers, there are a number of sledding facilities, many of which are free to the public and even offer rope tows up the hills. There are also a plethora of trails for those who prefer cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Gone Fishin In Flagler

Flagler Beach is a small town located on the Palm Coast of Florida. This Atlantic fishing town is home to about 5,000 year round residents and has an economy deeply rooted in fishing and tourism. Flagler is located between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine and was first incorporated in 1925 as a tiny fishing village. Since that time, the town has matured into a diverse seaside community which retains a great deal of its old Florida charm.

Flagler maintains six miles of beaches which are uncrowded for most of the year. Along with the beaches, amazing fishing spots are to be found there, including the Flagler Beach Municipal Pier. The Pier is one of the more well known spots for fishing in the area. The original pier was completed in 1927, soon after the city was incorporated. The pier has been extended over time and at one point allowed fishermen and visitors to stroll 1,000 feet out to sea. Storms and constant battering by the Atlantic have reduced the length to its present day 806 feet.

Fishing from the pier is permitted and encouraged, but a fishing license will have to be bought. They are obtainable from the bait shop which is prominently located on the pier.

On the other side of the state, on the long swath of white sand beach known as the Emerald Coast, is Seagrove Beach. This town started its creation as an extremely remote family property accessible by a single road. With the exception of a few cottages and a small beach rental, Seagrove Beach was undeveloped and left to the Florida wilds.

Since that generation, Seagrove Beach has begun development and become a major spot for those who would like to see what Old Florida was like during romantic getaways on the Emerald Coast and for guests interested in fishing and getting out into nature.

For folks who look forward to fishing in the backwaters, Seagrove Beach is one of the greatest points on the Emerald Coast. Kayak rentals are available, and fishing from a kayak is one of the more unique ways to explore regions of the coast that are inaccessible to bigger fishing vessels. Red Fish and trout are species commonly found in the flats.

For more traditional fishermen, red fish, flounder, and speckled trout are effortlessly caught in the Coctawatchee Bay with light tackle. Charters offered in Seagrove, particularly Smiling Fish Charters can lead guests on a range of fishing excursions into the bay.

For folks who are not as enthusiastic about fishing and just want to get out on the water, Smiling Fish also has Choctawatchee Bay and River Wildlife Photo Safari and a sunset cruise. This option is outstanding for family and friends who just want to explore the Emerald Coast and its natural splendor as the sun goes down.

I Wanna See You In The Colorado Mountains

You might easily spend a lifetime just exploring the Centennial State’s picturesque mountain country, which hosts a plethora of spectacular vistas populated with wildlife, world class hunting and fishing, and historic mining towns with old-world Victorian inns or bed and breakfasts. Long term cabin rentals are ideal bases of operation for your family’s Colorado escape. The Rockies present sights for everyone, from outdoors fanatics to history buffs.

Start your tour of America’s Alps in the town of Durango, located in Colorado’s southwestern corner. In the winter, the tourist has their choice of five different ski resorts inside an hour’s drive. In the summer, there is an almost inexhaustible number of activities in and around the village, including hiking, backpacking and mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking and golf. Rail fans will love riding the Durango & Silverton Railway, one of the last two remaining lines of the old Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge railroad. Powered by steam locomotives and featuring both open cars and antique rail coaches from a century ago, this is an actual working railroad that through the winter is the only manner to get in and out of Silverton to the north.

Traveling over the San Juan mountains, on the “Million Dollar Highway”, along the Rio de las Animas Perdidas, literally meaning “River of Lost Souls”, you will encounter most historic mining towns that include Silverton, Telluride, Ouray and Ridgway. At Montrose, you will need to cut over to the east on U.S. 50, skirting the southern edge of Gunnison National Forest in order to visit Gunnison and Salida, which is home to one of the oldest whitewater kayaking events in the country, the FIBArk Race, which is the “weekend that Salida comes out to play,” held in June during the spring runoff.

It is tough to pick one place in Colorado’s mountain country that stands over the rest but the Rocky Mountain National Park and nearby Estes Park in the north central part of the state are absolutely front runners. Take advantage of community cabin rentals, or stay at the historic Stanley Hotel, where novelist Steven King found the inspiration for The Shining. Founded by a settler from Missouri in 1859, Estes park is situated down the Big Thompson River, and is the gateway to the national park located just a few miles west.

You can travel the length of U.S. 34, the Trail Ridge Road, which has the distinction of being the highest unbroken highway in the country. This majestic drive will take you to an altitude of over 12,000 feet above sea level and some of the most colorful mountain scenery in North America, if not the world.

Of course, Colorado is the West, and that means cattle drives and horses. Well, the great cattle drives are long over and were primarily in the flat eastern part of the state, but you and your family can re-live some of it at one of the area’s many “dude ranches”. Despite the abundance of highways and jeep trails, there’s no better way to see this part of Colorado than from horseback.

My Pleasant Condition

Washington State offers an vast amount of biological splendor to be explored. From scenic shoreline beaches, to stunning mountains and volcanoes, Washington is truly spectacular territory.

Washington State has vast stretches of sandy beaches all along the Pacific Coast, down the Strait of Juan De Fuca and all around Puget Sound to Olympia. Outdoor activities include hiking, kayaking, fishing, scuba diving, walking the beach, bike riding and more.

The Strait of Juan de Fuca Highway, or SR112, is 61 miles along the coast of Washington. Along this highway is beautiful scenery. To allow yourself enough time to sight see at a leisurely pace, you should allow yourself about 8 hours at least. Reaching farther out into the cold waters of the North Pacific than any other mainland point in the 48 states, this byway follows the shoreline of a glacial fjord that connects Puget Sound to the Pacific Ocean. While you travel along the remote stretch of coastline with rugged cliffs and forests, watch as eagles search for food among rocks and gray whales feed. Natural wonders that are rare and exciting events in other places of the world are everyday occurrences here.

One of longest natural sand spits in the world, Dungeness Spit projects miles out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and offers magnificent views of the Olympic Mountains, Canada’s Vancouver Island, the San Juan Islands and a fascinating variety of sea vessels docked on one of North America’s greatest shipping lanes. Touring this northwest section of Washington should be enjoyed and not rushed, there is so much to see. There are charming vacation rentals all along this area to choose from and the proprietors are very accommodating in helping you choose the best sites to see.

Puget Sound is situated in the northwest area of Washington and is a breath taking place. Though there are variations inside Puget Sound, most marine waters of the Pacific Northwest are cold (45F to 55F) and very energetic, about 1.46 cubic miles of water rushes in and out of Puget Sound with the tides. Cut sharply by glaciers, Puget Sound is cavernous. In the northern Sound, depths of 600 to 800 feet are standard. In the southern Sound, depths of 300 feet are common. Puget Sound and the branches of the Strait of Juan de Fuca shape a trench between the Cascade and the Olympic mountains. Seven species of salmon spend all or a portion of their lives in Puget Sound. Estuaries and shallow waters shelter and nourish early salmon on their way to the sea. Puget Sound is overflowing with bed and breakfasts with such lovely views, it will be tough to go home.

Whidbey Island’s west side beaches face some of the stiffest winds and highest energy wave action in Puget Sound. In the 19th century, tall ships rode the winds into Admiralty Inlet and Puget Sound. Salmon follow the oxygen rich Whidbey shore as they migrate to sea and back. Orcas, gray whales, sea lions, birds and geoducks use the beaches, marine waters and tidelands of Admiralty Inlet while cruise ships, container vessels and nuclear submarines pass above.

Northwest Washington state is genuinely a stunning wonderland of natural beauty and delight for the senses. Allow yourself at least one week to spend here, and look forward to coming back for new adventures on each excursion.
